A friend of mine loves baking, and is supremely talented at it, and often when we meet she'll bring a box of tasty delights for me.
And on the mornings following, as the pot of coffee is gurgling to completion, I consider:

A brownie.
Like that could even be classified as a 'choice'...

Twenty seconds later: the same friend just emailed with the news that John Updike died, yesterday. Over on fora.tv, there's a lovely programme of Updike reading from The Terrorist. Charming, intelligent, astute. A great loss.
